My first 8-point
"My first 8-point taken on New Year's Eve '89

Article by Fred Messina, editor of "On Target Outdoors", from the Vicksburg Evening Post on Friday, January 19, 1990. Photo by Bob Phillips.

Bob Phillips came up the other day with a photo of his wife Marian and a deer she got on Brown's Point New Years Eve. The deer was an 8-point with 16 inches of inside spread that weighed in at 190 pounds. A nice trophy in anyone's book. However, the tale Bob told is that this was Marian's fourth deer this year and he claimed that he would have done better than he did if he had not spent so much time hauling Marian's deer out of the woods. Come off it, Bob. We all know who the hunter was.

Marian Phillips proudly exhibits the fine eight point buck she harvested last New Year's Eve on Brown's Point Hunting Club. Marian gives her husband Bob much of the CREDIT for her SUCCESS. It seems that on the morning hunt she saw several deer from her stand while Bob did not see any from his. Over lunch, Bob sagely suggested they switch stands for the afternoon's hunt. The rest, as they say, "is history". Congratulations, Marian!

Welcome to my home page!

I am 67 years old and live high on the bluffs of a historical civil war town of Vicksburg, MS. I was born and raised here and attended St. Francis Xavier Academy, graduating in the Class of 59. I started my government career at the Vicksburg District, USACE. I retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Waterways Experiment Station with 25 years service in September l995. I am a past member of International Association of Administrative Professionals, Key to the South Chapter, a member of Pi Alpha Kappa Sorority, Omega Chapter, Vicksburg Chamber of Commerce and Jasper Bottom Hunting Club. I have four daughters, Theresa Marie, 44 Kathleen Love, 42; Debra Ann, 38; and Marian Suzanne "Suzi", 35. I am the proud Grandmother (Gran-Gran) of five granddaughters and three grandsons. I also have a stepson Greg, 41, who also works for the Entergy at Grand Gulf. My step-daughter, Karen, 39, lives in Santa Fe, NM. This also includes six more step-grandchildren. I have been blessed with two great-grandsons, Tidus David, born May 2007 and James Marlin "Ian," born November 2007.

I also had a part-time/full time job with the Vicksburg Convention Center after I retired from July 1997 until December 2002. I guess you would say I was on my second career. My hobbies include dancing, walking in the National Military Park, playing on my computer, needlepoint, photography and hunting. I also enjoy collecting birdhouses, baskets, Coca Cola memorabilia, plates, and pewter. My present husband, Bob, introduced me to hunting 20 years ago. At the age of 44, I had never picked up a gun, much less shoot one. We have shared exciting hunting experiences together. My first deer was a 6-point after being on the stand for five minutes on "opening day". I used my step-son's .243. The following weekend I shot a spike with 9-3/4 inch horns with Bob's .30-06. I tell everyone after those two weekends he took the guns away from me. Not really! I now have my very own .270 Ruger (Featherweight). In addition, a Martin Lynx (Magnum) bow and my very own muzzleloader with my initials in the stock. Bob bought a kit and put it together for me. I harvested a doe with it and almost got a 4-point that kept coming back to her. Bob had the hide tanned on my second 8-point, and we have it on the wall. Looks neat!

In the last 21 years, I have harvested 32 deer. Even my daughter, Kathleen hunts and has harvested deer. Bob (who is now retired from ATCO in Labor Relations) taught me how to hunt with a gun, bow, muzzle loader and shotgun. He is my hunting buddy and best friend. It has opened up a whole new world for me, and I can't get enough of it. I love to hunt and be outdoors and share my stories with my hunting friends. I have met so many nice people at the Bowsite Bowhunting Conferences which gives you a lot of information that can be used. Sue Burch's Home Page (SusieQ's) is my favorite site to go to. Sue has some great deer recipes you just have to check out! She is also the founder of Women Hunters for women, about women and by women.

"First Deer for Carl"
Carlton "Carl" Thomas was hunting with his Gran Gran, Marian Phillips, during youth weekend (2003) when he got a
5-point buck somewhere around the Big Black River. The deer weighed 150 lbs. and he used his Gran Gran's .270 to make the nearly 100 yard shot.
High Five Carl!
